Bipolar Mood Disorder in children and adolescents: in search of theoretic, therapeutic and diagnostic clarity
First published in the South African Journal of Psychology
In his article on Bipolar Mood Disorder, Bruce addresses early onset Bipolar Mood Disorder, exploring the ways in which the disorder manifests in the lives of children. Complications in current and past literature are clarified, and the dearth of substantive research into the area is noted. He describes risk factors which are specific to paediatric bipolar disorder. A treatment procedure informed by cognitive-behavioural, narrative and family systems theories is given, and is considered in relation to the development of a pharmacological intervention. Shortcomings in psychiatric interventions are highlighted, and provides a framework for treatment which that takes into account the complex variety of needs which bipolar children present.
